A lot of people have asked me “What is this Foursquare thing” or “Why do you feel the need to check in whenever you go someplace” or the kicker to all of it “Foursquare is dumb”.
To the third point: Yes, Foursquare is dumb and I’ll even concede pointless, however for me it’s fun. I can go through my check-in history and see what I was doing on a certain day. Also, it’s a game. It’s also the only game that I choose to play that updates Facebook and Twitter. I’m not into Mafia Wars or Farmville so I’m just going to say this. You have your games and I have mine, but mine are rooted in real life, so I win.
To reply to the first comment: Foursquare is a game that people play where they check-in to a venue (restaurant, movie theater, etc…). By doing so they get points for checking in. 1 point for your first ‘stop’ of the day, 2 points for your second stop, etc… You also get 5 points for checking into someplace for the first time or for creating a new venue. Players that have checked into a venue more than once have the opportunity to become Mayor if they have checked in more than anyone else at that venue. On top of that you earn badges for accomplishments. There’s more information on a Wikipedia page that someone has authored.
My reply to the second comment is just as easy: “Because I want to”. It’s exactly what I said in reply to the ‘dumb’ comment. It’s a game that I choose to play. I know I don’t have to tell all of you, but you also don’t have to look. Sorry, but I got the same response from somebody regarding their Mafia Wars updates.
