Thanksgiving Weekend: I’m full

Wow, what an amazing weekend. I don’t think I’m going to eat more than a salad for meals the rest of the week.

Thursday was a lot of fun, went to Megan’s family dinner at her sister’s place and had all the usual fixings including some homemade cranberry chutney and a few version of pumpkin pie. I definitely overate (which is usual for me).

Friday started out REALLY early for the drive to Chicago for my cousin’s wedding reception. We got to Naperville around 2:30. I ended up taking a nap for a few hours in the hotel room (I drove) and then went across the street to the bar at the Hilton. It was a strange weekend for the hotel I was staying in and the one with the wedding reception. My hotel was at near-zero filled rooms for the weekend where the Hilton was completely full. There was a steak and seafood buffet at Allgauer’s Restaurant that night (Hilton restaurant) and I definitely ate more than I should have again. The rest of the evening was filled with beer (312, Honkers, and some locally brewed Pale Ale). We then headed over to a place called “Mullen’s” to see about a Beatle’s tribute band, however once we got there we noticed the $15.00 ‘tent’ charge and since there wasn’t a cover charge to get into the bar we figured we’d had enough for the night after a few beers and went and passed out at the hotel.

Saturday was great. We headed to Giodano’s for some of their world famous pizza. It was good, definitely not something you’d get in Minneapolis, but it was a bit on the soggy side to me with all the veggies making the bottom crust soggy. It definitely isn’t a carry-out pizza either since the 3 pieces we had left were almost wet when we tried to eat them later. Saturday night was the wedding reception. Seeing family that I haven’t seen in 20 years and meeting family that I have never met (kids). All in all a great night.

This morning we got going around 9:30 and we started out by having breakfast at Grandma Sally’s in Naperville. I was amazed. It seems like a run-down type of place from the outside, and the decor is definitely dated, but besides that the experience was a must stop if you’re in the area. Toby (my brother) got the skillet, Megan the strawberry waffle, and I got the spicy scrambled eggs. The wait staff was exceptionally attentive and kept our coffee cups and water glasses filled (sometimes without us noticing). The food we ordered came to the table in less than 10 minutes from time of ordering (and the place was packed). It was hot, fresh, and tasted like fresh everything. Toby’s over-easy eggs sat nicely and the yolks were HUGE (a good sign of fresh eggs). I definitely look forward to going back to this place if I’m in the neighborhood again. It was a random find from Saturday when we were looking for an ATM for Toby to use.

We got home right around halftime of the Vikings game. It was a great weekend.
