Verizon Droid Tryout: Day 2

I went to a haunted barn tonight and decided to try and see what the night time pics were like with the droid. Overall they aren’t too bad for being a cell phone camera taking pictures at night. (click images to see full-size). More stuff after the pics.

I have become a bit annoyed over the size of the phone. One thing that I was used to doing with my Blackberry Pearl and my myTouch is being able to do a lot of actions or uses with only one hand. This is nearly impossible with the Droid because of the size of the phone itself. For example: I have a solitaire game on the myTouch and now on the Droid. With the myTouch I can play the game with one hand pretty easily, but the Droid’s size and weight restrict me from doing this.

Another annoyance is the lack of call and end call buttons. I have to unlock the phone, find the phone application, touch it, then make my call. The same goes with ending a call or editing present call settings (mute/speaker/switch calls/incoming call). I was impressed with the feature where you take your ear away from the phone and the screen comes back up. This is a bit better in a few ways over the android 1.6 standard of “double touch screen to show dialpad”. I did notice a fair amount of slowdown today as apps kept piling themselves up after running. At one point I the browser killed off.

The Voice Search functionality is a LOT better on the 2.0 version. This may also be because the microphone doesn’t pic up background noise as much as the microphone on the myTouch. This can be good and bad considering that the speakerphone function with the mic’s sensitivity is greatly diminished in usefulness.

Those pictures are pretty good, but you have to admit, the second one down on the left is one great scary picture. That has Twitter icon potential for sure.

On the truck photos did the flash go off automatically in the first one and not on the others or did you set it differently. The flash is a huge help compared to phones without a flash.

Hmm… the pictures got posted in exactly backwards order. Starting at bottom right moving right to left and up… strange.

For your question: I was playing around with the scene settings when I tried to take a picture of the truck, but the scene I was on (night) had the flash turned off. The second flashless pic was with the scene turned off, but the flash didn’t turn back on automatically. Finally, the third image of the truck with the flash was no scene settings and the flash turned on.
