Went to Michigan this weekend to stay with my girlfriend’s sister and her husband in Ironwood at their cabin. This was my first trip to the Upper Peninsula and I was definitely not disappointed. It is absolutely gorgeous country and a great drive. It started raining once we got to Superior, WI, and continued to rain throughout the entire weekend, but with the wide open road and the relaxing nature of the whole place made me pretty much forget about that. Apparently so much so that the only thing I really took a picture of was, well, nothing. I have a video of me commenting on a few shop names and locations in Bayfield, but nothing really otherwise to show.

We made it to Ironwood early Friday evening and got settled in with some nice Three Lakes Winery Cranberry wine. It was good, but had a tart to it that definitely doesn’t bode well for more than a glass or two at a time. We went out to eat at the local Italian place. It was good enough for hungry travelers, but there wasn’t a lot of taste to any of it. They do make handmade noodles for their green pasta, but it seemed like there was a lot of butter added. I’m wary to compare too much to food that I get in Minneapolis or Saint Paul because I grew up with oversized portions and more-towards-the-bland side taste. Megan’s nephew ordered the pizza, and I got to have some the next day. It was delicious, and homemade. So they’ve got that down.

Megan and I decided to get away to ourselves on Saturday and headed to Bayfield, WI. This town is the port for Madeline Island, and there are plenty of shops for browsing and shopping. A lot of the shops are shops featuring local artists’ work in painting, glass, jewelery, and some sculpture. Definitely plenty to see in an afternoon. We were lucky that it was a little cold and rainy because usually the downtown would be packed with people.

Saturday night the rain stopped and we headed up to see the “Paulding Light“. Even though it was a really cool evening and had been raining all day, there were still about 30 people sitting around watching the light. It wasn’t very bright and didn’t do some of the cool stuff that we had been told about, but still interesting. I think it’s traffic lights from a distance, but people that live there say that when the lights are really active it’s quite obvious that they aren’t. I’ll have to see that to not go with my suspicion.

Sunday was an easy day for a trip back. The weather was gorgeous. Cool and sunny make for an easy drive. We stopped in Hayward to visit my aunt and uncle. The previous Thursday my uncle had asked me if I wanted anything special for dinner, of course I said no. But instead he cooked his famous ribs. Always delicious and always welcome.

OK, I’ll post my video as well, and I’ll repeat, it’s my sarcastic voice.
